A successful FTP login followed by a directory listing failure often points to a data connection problem.

## Use passive mode

Passive mode is usually more compatible with clients behind NAT. Confirm the FTP server exposes the configured passive port range through its firewall.

## Check encryption and ports

Match FTP, FTPS or SFTP settings to the provider instructions. SFTP uses SSH and is not the same protocol as FTP over TLS.

## Read the client log

The FileZilla message log identifies timeout, certificate, authentication and permission errors. Share the relevant error lines with support without exposing passwords.
